DDoS Protection

Having problems with DDoS attacks on your gameserver or services? Not with us.

Network (Layer 3) attacks

Also known as protocol based or volumetric attacks. These attacks target vulnerabilities in network protocols (IP, ICMP). Bad actors will use this type of attack to sap your servers bandwidth and disrupt your interactions with services by flooding the infrastructure with huge amounts of traffic. This is what leads to the Denial of Service to legitimate users of your services.

Transport (Layer 4) Attacks

L4 attacks target the transport layer of the OSI network model by exploiting vulnerabilities in the transport protocols (TCP/UDP). This can be achieved by sending large amounts of connection requests with spoofed IP addresses. SYN packets are also sent to initiate handshake requests but they are never completed leaving the server hanging. Floods of UDP requests also overwhelm the servers ability to process legitimate traffic.

Application (Layer 7) Attacks

Perhaps the most sophisticated, application layer attacks can be used by bad actors to steal data, take networks offline, disrupt businesses and extort funds from service owners. This is achieved, in part, by making HTTP requests that seem genuine, for example, to knock services offline by completely overwhelming them. This is difficult to defend against because this type of traffic appears to be genuine.

What is a DDoS Attack?

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are malicious attempts to disrupt your services made by bad actors. Our services powered by Cosmic Guard work to prevent these issues.

DDoS can be a complicated issue, here is some information on some of the different types of attack.

DDoS Protection: What Does It Mean For Game Servers?

In the fast-paced world of online gaming, ensuring the uninterrupted performance of your game servers is paramount. One of the most destructive threats to your servers’ stability is a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. These malicious attacks can not only disrupt gameplay but also tarnish your players’ experience and, consequently, your brand’s reputation.

Implementing robust DDoS protection is not just an option anymore; it’s a necessity. By fortifying your game servers with cutting-edge DDoS protection measures, you can shield your servers from these debilitating attacks and guarantee seamless gameplay for your users.

The impact of DDoS attacks on game servers can be devastating, affecting not only the functionality of the server but also the overall gaming experience for users. During an attack, players may experience significant lag, connectivity issues, or complete service outages, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction. This disruption can result in a loss of player engagement and loyalty, as gamers are likely to move on to more stable alternatives if their experience is continuously hindered.

Beyond the immediate financial and operational consequences your community can suffer, a DDoS attack can tarnish a game’s reputation. Players expect reliable performance and seamless experiences, and repeated outages can lead to negative reviews and diminished trust in the brand. In an industry where player loyalty is paramount, maintaining a strong reputation is essential for long-term success. Therefore, understanding the impact of DDoS attacks is critical for game server operators aiming to protect their infrastructure and uphold their gaming community’s trust.

How DDoS Protection Works

DDoS protection operates through a combination of traffic analysis, filtering, and redirection techniques designed to identify and neutralize malicious traffic before it reaches the targeted server. The protection solution typically consists of both hardware and software components that work together to monitor incoming traffic patterns and detect anomalies indicative of DDoS attacks. By analyzing data in real-time, these systems can distinguish between legitimate user requests and harmful traffic patterns.

One of the core mechanisms of DDoS protection involves rate limiting, which restricts the number of requests a server will accept from a single source within a specified timeframe. By limiting the amount of traffic that can come from a single IP address, DDoS protection solutions can effectively reduce the impact of volumetric attacks. Additionally, traffic scrubbing is employed, where incoming traffic is routed through a filtering system that eliminates harmful packets while allowing legitimate traffic to pass through.

Moreover, many DDoS protection services utilize cloud-based solutions that can absorb and mitigate large-scale attacks. By redirecting traffic through a network of distributed servers, these solutions can handle a significant volume of requests without overwhelming the target server. This approach not only protects the game server but also ensures that players experience minimal disruption, even during an ongoing attack. Consequently, understanding these protective mechanisms is vital for game operators looking to secure their servers effectively.

What do you get?

We understand that running your services is important to you, whatever they are. We do our best to make this as easy as possible. All our customers benefit from:

How does this help?

Our DDos protection is provided by Coreo. In the past we have used other providers but there were issues which forced us to hunt for a better supplier…and we found them!

You no longer need to change rules in firewalls, your DDoS protection is ready to go at all times. The only things you should be doing is keeping to normal best practices by keeping unused ports closed on your server. You can use Windows Firewall for Windows OS or UFW for Linux based distros.

As we are a Game Server oriented host lets use an example in this area. Lets say you have a FiveM server which has grown, gotten popular and as a side effect of this you’ve had to ban some players for trying to use cheats. This person then goes onto try and take their revenge against your server by starting a DDoS attack. This sort of attack could last minutes, hours, days or even weeks on and off. This can be incredbly disruptive for your community.

Hosting your server with us means you can rest assured that attacks are filtered out before they ever become a problem. Even if something were to get through the cracks we can work live and make changes to the network setup to nullify the problems

In the past we have used other providers who seem to have caused more problems than they solve. Leaking attacks causing unnecessary downtime to customers who aren’t even being attacked. As part of our pledge to provide the best possible service to our customers we took the decision to change DDoS protection providers to prevent this from happening…enter Coreo!
